The history of tourmaline used to make gems is short, but because of its beauty of rich colors and high transparency, it has won people's love when it came out, and it is called a gem of all kinds. In the palaces of the Qing Dynasty in China, there were more tourmalines. The composition of the tourmaline is complex and the color is complex and varied. Nowadays, the international jewellery industry basically divides commercial varieties into tourmalines by color.
1, red tourmaline
Red is the highest value among the tourmalines, among which the best is purple and rose red, and it is called red tourmaline. In China, there is the name of “baby faceâ€. However, the natural world produces more brown, maroon, and deep red, and the color tone changes greatly.
2, green tourmaline
Includes light green to dark green, yellow green or brownish green. Some colors may be dark or deep, and only visible through light. Dark green is almost opaque in the direction of the optical axis due to its strong dichroism, but can be improved by heat treatment. The best is emerald green, which was mistaken for emeralds in Europe and Brazil, showing its level of luxury. Currently only produced in Brazil and Madagascar.
3, blue tourmaline
Pure blue is rare, common deep purple blue or green blue. Color saturation is more precious, sometimes called "blue tourmaline." Occasionally light blue to light green blue.
4, yellow and orange tourmaline
Pure yellow or orange is hard to see. Different shades of yellow or brown are popular, like sherry topaz and golden beryl. Green brown to brown green, orange brown to brown orange and green yellow also have certain sales. The color is very deep, and the poor gloss is almost no sales. Mineralogists sometimes call brown tourmalines magnesium tourmaline.
5, colorless or white tourmaline
Sometimes called white tourmaline (achroite, Greek "white" meaning). It's almost useless on gems unless it has a cat's eye effect.
6, black tourmaline
Mineralogists call it black tourmaline. Occasionally used to replace coal or black chalcedony on cheap jewelry.
7, multicolor tourmaline
There are two or more colors on a crystal, or different from top to bottom, or different from inside to outside. If the middle is red, the outside is green, also called "watermelon tourmaline." Multicolor tourmalines are sometimes used as gemstones, but are more suitable for viewing or collecting crystal specimens without cutting.
8, cat's eye tourmaline or tourmaline opal
Some green tourmalines have a lot of slits or needle-like inclusions, cut into a curved surface, and the cat's eye effect can be seen. Other colors have less cat's eye effect.
9, tourmaline stone
Rare, occasionally reported. Yellow-green to brownish green in the sun, orange-red under the light.
